Sassi Simone e Simoncello is a Regional Park and one of the four natural reserves of Marche.
The park was established in 1994 and extends in the northernmost area of the Umbria-Marche Apennines, or in the Montefeltro area, in the province of Pesaro-Urbino, between Carpegna, Frontino, Piandimeleto, Pietrarubbia and Pennabilli. On the slopes of the mountains, the park covers 4847 hectares and is delimited by the rivers Marecchia, Conca and Foglia. The reserve also includes the summit of Mount Carpegna.
Within the vast area, various floral and faunal environments are distinguished by type and by vegetational and morphological characteristics.
The park is home to numerous species of wild animals, from the fox, the most common carnivore, to the badger, which digs its characteristic dens in the woods, the small and agile weasel, the marten and the polecat, which are mustelids with marked nocturnal habits. The presence of the roe deer was sporadic up to 30 years ago, but it is now easier to meet it throughout the Apennines, while encountering a fallow deer is less frequent. Wolves and birds of prey can be found in the highest peaks of the Apennines.
This park also offers different paths to be enjoyed accompanied by nature guides, and for the more adventurous ones, mountain bike routes.
