It is not easy to decide what to start from when talking about the city center: you would never expect to find such a rich artistic and architectural heritage in a primarily maritime town.
The historic center is concentrated between the Misa river, which draws a wide loop, the sea and the tree-lined avenues leading towards the residential districts: each single street or monument has its own origin and each one tells a bit of the history of Senigallia, the first Roman colony on the Adriatic side and formerly a borderland of the Senones, whom it was named after.
Senigallia has a Celtic origin and it was precisely the Senones who settled in the Misa valley five centuries before the birth of Christ. In the following centuries, the town enters the Italic period of its history and numerous traces of this long and fascinating journey can be found while walking through its streets.
It should be noted that Senigallia was dominated by the Malatesta, Sforza, Della Rovere and the Papacy, and in 1502 it was the setting of a striking and bloody massacre by Cesare Borgia, Duke Valentino. Today, the historic center animates the summer evenings by acting as a stage for pleasant cultural entertainment and entertainment events.
