Established in 1987, the Conero Regional Park is an environmental oasis set up around Mount Conero, which extends for 572 meters of Mediterranean scrub overlooking the sea. It is a protected area where you can walk, alone or accompanied by expert guides, along the 18 paths that wind through the woods, observe migratory birds flying around, visit precious historical-artistic testimonies, such as the Watchtower and the Romanesque church of S. Maria in the bay of Portonovo.
On the opposite side, the mountain slopes more gently towards the hills of Poggio, Massignano, Camerano, in a gentle and varied rural landscape.
To the north, there are splendid beaches and the bay of Portonovo, with the rocks of Trave, Cane and Cavallo. Above you can see the former convent of Camaldolesi, now used as a hotel, the steep slopes of the South Lookout, the Passo del Lupo, a suggestive path that gives access to the beach of unmistakable rocks, the Due Sorelle.
To the south are the renowned beaches of Numana and Sirolo.
At the Conero there are hidden coves reachable only from the sea, which is always crystal-clear and offers scents of forest and flowers. Nature lovers find everything and more, from silent paths in the woods to bird watching on the reeds of Portonovo.
The Conero Regional Park has defended itself well from the aggression of cement, while small farms proliferate, some of which famous also for an excellent wine, precisely Rosso Conero, now also sold in DOCG version. In this area, all types of vegetables and fruit and delicate types of honey are produced; the park lavender is well known and the splendid spring flowering of the broom alternates with the autumn strawberry tree. Berries are harvested and even precious and rare truffles are cultivated. Farm animals are raised on farms and it is easy to find a resting place and a good country diner.
