The Reserve, located in the municipality of Jesi, halfway between the Regional Parks of Monte Conero and Gola della Rossa and Frasassi, and crossed by the Esino river, is one of the most important wetlands in the Marche Region.
Until the Eighties, the current site of the Reserve was far from appearing as an area of natural interest: visiting the Reserve today becomes a tangible example of how strongly anthropized places can recover their original natural aspect and recreate an ecosystem balance such as to become a protected area.
At a time when human activities declined, a colony of herons spontaneously settled here in the early 90s. In those years, Sergio Romagnoli, along with other WWF members and naturalists from Jesi, began their struggle for the conservation of the identified heron colony.
The protection of the area began in 1997 with the establishment by the municipality of Jesi of the educational/naturalistic area “Sergio Romagnoli”, who had in the meantime tragically passed away. The management of the 18-hectare area was entrusted to WWF Italy, which included it in the national WWF Oasis system as “WWF Ripa Bianca di Jesi Oasis”.
Over the years, the protected area has obtained numerous awards: Provincial Wildlife Protection Oasis, Environmental Experience Center, Community Interest Site and Special Protection Area.
The management of the Reserve has been entrusted to WWF Italy
