Behind the Town Hall, Palazzo Mastai-Ferretti is linked to a religious figure of great importance in papal history, Pope Pius IX.
The birthplace of Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti, better known as Pius IX, the last pope with temporal power, is today an interesting and documented museum. Ten rooms with the bedroom, paintings, coins, letters, household items, clothing: overall, 600 memorabilia that partly recall the Pope’s 32 years of pontificate.
The entrance hall on the first floor was entirely painted by Giovanni Inastasi from Senigallia (1635-1704), while the biblical cycle, properly restored in 2007, offers majestic architectural perspectives, evanescent landscapes, highly expressive characters, as well as a real size self-portrait that seems to greet visitors.
